Essential Oils & Carrier Oils

Essential oils are the aromatic compounds found naturally in the flowers, leaves, bark, wood and fruit of plants. Essential oils attract bees and other pollinators with their aromas. They are also highly antimicrobial, therefore are part of the plant’s immune response to repel bacteria and other pathogens.

It takes many kilos of raw plant material to make the essential oils we find in aromatherapy bottles. This makes essential oils incredibly concentrated and potent, with strong therapeutic properties.

Interestingly, essential oils are not oily; their consistency is more like water. Most essential oil are pale in colour, although some have a tint and a few are coloured, for example, chamomile is blue and myrrh is brown.

Carrier oils are also included in this section.
