Konjac sponges are a staple in Japanese skincare and are now available here in Pocklington. 

Konjac sponges are made using extracts from konjac plants. These sponges are natural, effective, sustainable, and the perfect addition to every skincare routine. 

Konjac is a potato-like plant and is a traditional food, unique to Japan. Though once a delicacy, Japanese people now eat konjac daily as it is a low-calorie, high-fiber food that is known for improving gut health. 

It is said that konjac was introduced to Japan as shojin cuisine, or vegetarian food for Buddhist monks. 

Over time, people grew their own konjac potatoes in their own fields. They processed them by hand, producing only enough for their families. What was not eaten was repeatedly frozen and dried by hanging it outside for a few days during the harsh winter season. After this process, only konjac fibres remained, and these were used to make konjax sponges.

Before soft cloth was commonplace, parents wanted to wash their newborn children without irritating their delicate skin. The konjac sponge – now a Japanese skin care tradition – was born from this parental love. 

Konjac has unparalleled water retention, moisturising power and softness. Additionally, it is a colourless and odourless vegetable fibre. This makes it an essential element in skincare and allows for a wide range of uses where gentleness is key.

Konjac sponges are popular among those with sensitive skin. To remove dirt without irritating skin, konjac sponges are slightly alkaline with a pH of 8.0 to 9.0. When you use a konjac sponge to gently wash your face, the soft 100% natural fibres and the water film gently remove dirt without damaging your skin. 

How to use Konjac Sponges?

• Soak - Soak it in warm water for 3 minutes to expand it to full size. 
• Clean - Once it is full size, begin cleaning your face by moving the sponge in a circular motion and massage your face. 
• Massage - Start in the centre of your face and work your way out and up. 
• Drain and Dry - When finished, drain it by clasping the sponge between your hands and dry it by hanging in a well-ventilated place. 
• Use - You can use it every day! 
• Replace - Replace your konjac sponge about every 4 weeks.
